The Jacksonville Jaguars will enter training camp with a lot of unanswered questions needing to be solved before the 2023 NFL season.
But as is the case every single year, the league's dead period tends to lead to some overblown stories taking an exaggerated life of its own. That's why I decided I'd dive into three storylines that might be getting relatively out of control.
Let's dive in.
1. Devin Lloyd as a pass rusher
During minicamp, Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson teased fans by talking about the team's usage of Lloyd as an edge rusher in certain defensive packages.
"I've seen this offseason putting him in a couple of different positions," Pederson told reporters earlier this month. "Still want to keep him off the ball, but he's also a good edge rusher as well in different packages and what Mike [Caldwell] wants to do defensively."
Pederson and even GM Trent Baalke have hinted at that change for Lloyd more than once this offseason but defensive coordinator Mike Caldwell almost immediately shot it down when he was in front of the mic a couple of weeks ago.
"Really Devin is an inside linebacker and inside linebackers typically blitz," Caldwell said. "So when you line them up on the end of the line – which we have, we've lined him up there – that's really not their forte."
I'm not buying a whole lot into the whole narrative here. Sure, there will be some packages where Lloyd will be able to pin his ears back and get after the quarterback. But for me most part, I see this becoming a non-story during the season. Give me Caldwell's word over Pederson's on this one.
2. Christian Kirk vs. Calvin Ridley
I'm guilty of this one. It's very fun to try to pin down who's the true No. 1 wide receiver on any offense. And deep inside, Christian Kirk and Calvin Ridley are going to be fighting to be Trevor Lawrence's go-to option.
But ultimately, Kirk specializes in the slot with 75% of his snaps coming inside in 2022. Ridley will dominate the outside. The only battle going on here is who'll get more targets throughout the year. Sure, it's going to be fun. But it's not your typical position battle for playing time.
3. Nickel cornerback competition
Heading into the offseason, we all seemed to believe the Jaguars would hold a position battle at nickel cornerback. Tyson Campbell and Darious Williams seem locked in outside but the slot role will be blurrier.
Or not?
"I think, like towards the end of the season, Tre Herndon – he doesn't get a lot of credit – but towards the end of the season, he kind of settled us down," Caldwell said in minicamp. "He played a nickel role in certain games, you didn't hear his name called, and when you don't hear your guy's name called, that's a good thing. When you don't hear his name, that allows the other team guys to really excel."
There's always competition, but it sounds like the Jags already have a favorite.
NFL insider points to the ‘last’ decision Jaguars must make before season
The Jacksonville Jaguars aren’t going to do much before training camp starts. But there’s one thing the front office must decide on.
