The Indianapolis Colts hold the No. 4 selection in a quarterback-heavy NFL Draft. Which means it does not seem very realistic for the team to get their top-ranked signal caller when they get on the clock.
However, ESPN draft expert Mel Kiper Jr. sees things differently. He believes that Indianapolis could very well get the second-best quarterback in the class — without even trading up in the draft order.
That is because Kiper views Kentucky's Will Levis as the No. 2 signal caller in the 2023 draft, only behind Bryce Young. Who goes first overall in his latest mock draft. Kiper explains how the Colts could come away with the second best QB.
In his most recent mock draft, Kiper has Young to the Panthers, CJ Stroud to the Texans, and Anthony Richardson at third overall. Leaving Levis, who Kiper is higher on than a large portion of draft experts.
"I'm sticking with Levis to Indianapolis here," Kiper wrote for ESPN. "General manager Chris Ballard could get lucky with my second-ranked quarterback still on the board."
Ballard and the Colts have met with Levis multiple times in the pre-draft process. There is no doubt that they would run to the podium if they think as high of Levis as Kiper does.
The ESPN draft expert went into detail as to why he ranks Levis higher than Stroud and Richardson. Essentially, Kiper believes that Levis can start right away and has the ceiling to continuing developing.
"Why do I like Levis over Stroud and Richardson? Because of his ability both in and out of the pocket," wrote Kiper. "In 2021, when Levis was really on, he made "wow" throws to every part of the field and also ran for nine scores.
"Last season, while dealing with injuries and after losing a lot of talent around him, he forced too many throws and was inconsistent," he continued. "I think Levis' floor is high, and he'll be able to start immediately for the Colts."
The thought is that the Indianapolis Colts will be forced to trade up in the order to ensure that come away with a franchise signal caller. However, in this scenario, the Colts are coming away winners in the eyes of Mel Kiper.
