The Chicago Bears are the unquestioned winners of the NFL’s first wave of free agency.
The Bears took advantage of their salary cap flexibility by making a few major splashes in the free agency pool. Defensive additions such as Tremaine Edmunds and T.J. Edwards strengthened the middle of the unit, while DeMarcus Walker and Rasheem Green give the pass rush a boost.
Chicago’s young secondary has remained mostly intact. That being said, there is plenty of time to find upgrades at key positions. One potential fit comes in the form of a former second-rounder with ties to head coach Matt Eberflus.
ESPN recently released an article listing the NFL’s top remaining free agents. Checking in at No. 2 was cornerback Rock Ya-Sin.
CB Rock Ya-Sin
From ESPN: "Ya-Sin has just two interceptions over his four pro seasons, but with press-man traits, zone awareness and a competitive playing style, he is a physical corner who can disrupt at the line of scrimmage and tackle. The 2019 second-round pick had seven pass breakups last season, and he allowed just one touchdown catch as the nearest defender in coverage, according to NFL Next Gen Stats."
Drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft, Ya-Sin started 29 games in three seasons. Eberflus served as the Colts’ defensive coordinator over the same time frame.
Ya-Sin and Eberflus both moved on from Indianapolis with the former being traded to the Las Vegas Raiders in exchange for DE Yannick Ngakoue, who coincidentally ranks first on ESPN’s list.
Eberflus knows how to utilize Ya-Sin’s talents in the secondary, but more importantly he knows whether or not the cornerback fits Chicago’s defensive system.
The Bears could opt to let cornerbacks Jaylon Johnson and Kyler Gordon to continue to grow under Eberflus’ tutelage. However if Chicago is looking to add some experience with familiarity in the system, Ya-Sin makes the most sense of the available options.
