Over the course of the last decade, the Dallas Cowboys have had a fairly predictable draft strategy when it comes to the second round of the NFL Draft.

That strategy has been taking players who had first-round/borderline first-round film who have fallen into the second round.

The reason the player has fallen varies. Sometimes it is medically-related, as we saw with Jaylon Smith, sometimes it is off-the-field concerns as we saw with Sam Williams, Randy Gregory, and to some extent, Kelvin Joseph.

Jaylon Smith was a story arc you were just praying panned out, as he was a widely regarded first-round pick before suffering a gruesome knee injury. The story in Dallas started off well, and he even earned himself a big contract extension. However, just as quickly as the story started; it fell off.

Smith would come to be consistently called out by fans. He'd miss tackles, fill the wrong gaps, give questionable effort on plays, and dive on piles late to give the appearance he was trying. And who could forget the famous swipe that fans came to receive so well.

As it currently stands, Jaylon Smith is not on a team. He was briefly with the division rival New York Giants, where most of his time was spent on their practice squad, before being called up for in-season action.

Randy Gregory was another one that Dallas fans had a "ride" with, to put it lightly. Fans were often frustrated due to his inability to see the field thanks to the league's substance abuse policy. When he did finally see the field, he was quite good.

He's yet to record a double-digit sack season in his career. However, in his last year in Dallas, he had 6.0 sacks, 17 QB hits, one interception, and three forced fumbles.

And, two years ago Gregory's contract negotiations became a big talking point among Dallas and national media alike. He initially accepted an extension offer from the Cowboys that was around $5 million less than he was being offered from other teams, but he realized there was a clause in the contract that voided guaranteed money if he was suspended or fined. This was a last second alteration to the contract that the Cowboys made, and naturally, Gregory didn't like it

That caused him to sign with the Denver Broncos, who gave him an offer that did not have that clause in the contract.

Kelvin Joseph was selected in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft. He was suspended from LSU for the final game of the season for a "violation of team rules." Afterward, he transferred to Kentucky and put together a nice season.

So far in the NFL, Joseph has had minimal impact. Amassing only three starts, he has had only four pass defections.

Last year, Joseph was questioned in a homicide investigation. He was the passenger in the car where gunshots were fired. Joseph met with the police and was eventually cleared of any charges.

Now let's talk about Sam Williams. The most recent Cowboys selection, he is no exemption. Williams was arrested in 2020 for felony charge of sexual battery and was later suspended indefinitely by the Ole Miss football team. He denied any wrongdoing and the charges were eventually dropped. Therefore, Ole Miss reinstated him.

Most recently, a warrant was issued for his arrest following a car crash. Williams was briefly hospitalized following the crash. The warrant was eventually resolved and Williams missed one game due to a concussion and a neck strain.

On the field, Williams was used as a rotation piece along the Cowboys defensive line. He registered 4.0 sacks, nine QB hits, one forced fumble, and three fumble recoveries in his rookie year.

In this year's draft, is there a player that fits that criteria?

Jalen Carter has had some issues pop up, but surely he won't fall to 26; much less the second round.

Stetson Bennett was arrested following a public intoxication, Zach Evans has some "baggage" according to The Athletic's Dane Brugler; however neither of those players warrant a round two selection, much less a round one selection.

Garrett Williams might fit the criteria, as he has been getting some first round buzz. He is coming off a torn ACL, but lacks ideal size or length, that warrant a first round selection in my eyes.

As a whole, I would say this class lacks the player that fits that "Cowboys special" type of pick in the second round, which honestly, isn't really a bad thing when breaking it all down.
