Picking 26th means the board could fall a plethora of ways before the Dallas Cowboys are finally on the clock. More than likely, the board is going to dictate the team's first-round decision when the time comes.
However, multiple NFL insiders have been in surprising agreement as to what position the Cowboys could lean toward: tight end.
It's a strong year for the position and Michael Mayer (Notre Dame) and Dalton Kincaid (Utah) are widely expected to be first-round picks. Some even expect Georgia's Darnell Washington or Oregon State's Luke Musgrave to also be picked early.
But it's notable that many of the top draft insiders like Todd McShay, Mel Kiper, Daniel Jeremiah, and Dane Brugler have all mocked tight ends to the Cowboys as of late. It's particularly noteworthy that this trend intensified right after the Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.
Adding fuel to the fire is ESPN's Jordan Reid who said this about the Cowboys' draft strategy in a recent "draft buzz" article:
With a huge hole at tight end, expect the Cowboys to be aggressive in finding a dynamic option there, perhaps at the end of Round 1. Dalton Kincaid (Utah) is one name to watch — he has a similar skill set to Mike Gesicki and could give Dak Prescott a safety blanket and a seam-stretcher. Kincaid has battled through a back injury during the pre-draft process, but multiple teams that I spoke to still believe that he will be a first-round pick.
Kincaid is perhaps the best receiving option among this year's tight ends while Mayer could be the better all-around prospect. Chances are only one of them (if any) is available by the time the Cowboys pick.
But one thing has become increasingly clear: Insiders around the league expect Dallas to lean tight end in the first round.
With Mike McCarthy taking over play-calling duties in order to push the offense in the later stages of the season, getting Dak Prescott a potential upgrade over Dalton Schultz could be the right call.
