This past free agency was a big one for the Chiefs as they try and make the roster better than it was last year, preparing to defend their title better this time than in 2020. The Chiefs signed some great players, and they lost some great players.

But, all of that is to say that their roster is better now than it was then, and that is all that matters. They had some very underrated signings of players that are very good but paid them fairly well for both sides.

One of those underrated signings was linebacker Drue Tranquill, who is a guy that was the best linebacker on the Chargers, and a really good coverage linebacker, yet the Chiefs got him for roughly $5 million.

Andy Reid was happy about that signing and explained why during his press conference with the media on Monday.

"Well, we're glad he's on our team," Reid said. "We've had to face him, you know, a couple of times every year. So, what we felt was this guy is a heck of a football player. He'll have great flexibility to Spags' [defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo] group, which, you know, how Spags does it with different personnel groups. And there's plenty of room for all of them. And, listen he's a good football player. He's a smart kid. He's got great size, he's got good strength, he can cover, you know, in other words, run and cover. So, we just had an opportunity to get him. I sort of like the way he plays."

Tranquill will likely be taking Willie Gay's spot on the defense and will add a layer of a guy that can cover bigger receivers and tight ends. The Chiefs need that. Nick Bolton is great, but he isn't the best at coverage, and that is where Tranquill will come in and make up for Bolton's flaws.

The Chiefs stole a division rivals starter ad will use him to his best ability. The Chiefs are a team that players go to and have career years or seasons that put them on the map. It's only a one-year deal, but it was a huge one for Kansas City.

Between him and the Charles Omenihu signing, the Chiefs' defense will be improved. Oh, and they are going to grab some guys in the draft, along with last year's rookies going into their second season.
