It has been assumed that the Indianapolis Colts sit in a less-than-ideal spot while picking No. 4 overall in the 2023 NFL Draft. That's because the foregone conclusion has been that the first two – or even three – selections of the first-round will be quarterbacks.
Which would therefore leave the QB-needy Colts with, at best, the third best signal caller in the class. Not exactly the best scenario for a franchise with a first-year head coach, a general manager on the hot seat, and a desperate need behind center.
However, recent draft smoke is indicating that the Houston Texans may not take a passer at No. 2 overall, after all. Especially if Bryce Young is already off the board. If the Texans pass on a QB in favor of a defender, the whole draft could be put on its head.
And that is exactly the scenario that ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter sees playing out. In fact, Schefter believes there is a legitimate opportunity for the Colts to have their "pick of the litter" at their selection.
"I think Indianapolis thinks that there's a real chance right now that they could sit right where they are at four and get potentially the second best quarterback in this draft," Schefter said on ESPN.
A situation where the Colts get to choose from three of the top four passers is a dream scenario for Shane Steichen and Chris Ballard. It would all but ensure that they come away with an answer behind center.
"There's a chance that we don't see a quarterback go at two – or even three – and there may not be a team that trades up because the value isn't what we thought it would be," Schefter explained. "Indianapolis may be sitting there with its pick of the litter. Anthony Richardson, or Will Levis or C.J. Stroud."
Schefter is one of multiple respected members of the media suggesting that the Texans could pass on quarterback with their first selection. If the Cardinals do to – and don't trade the pick – the Colts would be sitting very pretty.
It's becoming clear that the Indianapolis Colts should be just be fine staying put at their pick as the NFL Draft inches closer.
