If you ask 10 different people to do mock drafts, odds are more than likely you're going to get 10 completely different mock drafts back. When you ask for team-specific mock drafts, things can become more clear, as you will likely see less variance.
However that is not the case for the Detroit Lions this year.
Some people have the Lions going corner and taking Illinois CB Devon Witherspoon, others have them taking Florida QB Anthony Richardson, while others have them addressing the offensive or defensive line.
The Lions are truly an interesting talking point in this draft, due to the number of ways they could go.
As of right now the betting favorite for the Lions is Illinois CB Devon Witherspoon. However an NFL insider recently came out with his first mock draft of the offseason and he has the Lions going an unconventional, yet realistic route.
In his mock, NFL Network's Peter Schrager had Jalen Carter falling all the way to the Lions at No. 6. Understandably, they did not hesitate to take him.
Having two blue-chip talents in Carter and Aidan Hutchinson next to each other on the defensive line would leave offensive lines restless the night before their impending matchups. Carter is widely viewed as the best prospect in this class, but off-field concerns have led to a recent fall in mock drafts.
If he is there at six, when the Lions are on the clock, you would have to think serious consideration would be given to take him. And, the key with Schrager's mock drafts is he bases the picks on the information he receives from around the NFL. Therefore, someone has told him that a Lions-Carter matchup at six is certainly a possibility if it comes to fruition.
The Lions have two first-round picks in this year's draft. It is with their second first-round pick that Schrager has them addressing the secondary. At pick No. 18, he has the Lions taking Penn State CB, Joey Porter Jr.
The Lions were active fixing the secondary in free agency, however that has not stopped draft analysts from mocking corner(s) to the Lions. In this scenario they forgo the top options in Gonzalez and Witherspoon, due to Jalen Carter being on the board.
Instead, they settle for the top of the next tier player in Joey Porter.
