Despite the fact that they already have a good duo in their running back room, the Detroit Lions make a lot of sense as a team to target a running back in the 2023 NFL Draft.
Hopefully that back doesn't end up being Bijan Robinson. There may be a need for the Lions and an offense that still has room to grow in the run department, but spending such a rich pick on a back doesn't have the best history of working out.
The good news for the Lions is that they can still find a back in one of the middle rounds that would up the quality of the room without forcing Detroit to give up too much to bring him in.
The Lions are obviously trying to keep their options open for anything, and in this spirit of this they chose to meet with TCU running back Kendre Miller.
Miller currently projects to fall somewhere on the Day Three range if all holds equal and there isn't an early run on backs, and that could make him the perfect fit with the Lions based on value alone.
Detroit doesn't need another top guy with D'Andre Swift and David Montgomery on the roster. What the Lions really need to help the rushing attack without hurting another position is a good pick that costs little, and Kendre Miller in the fourth round sure looks like that prospect.
Miller had a great college career with the Horned Frogs, especially during his senior season, and he tested well in most ways without testing off the charts.
No one is clamoring to bring Miller in early, but that just isn't the type of player he is. Instead, Miller is probably going to be a value steal for someone that can wait as long as possible to snag him and put him in that RB3 role, and it looks like the Lions are at least trying to keep that option open heading into one of their most important seasons in a long time.
