Tennessee Vols head coach Josh Heupel was in Nashville on Wednesday for the second stop on the Big Orange Caravan tour.
(The Big Orange Caravan is making five stops across the state of Tennessee between this week and May 3.)
Heupel joined 104.5 The Zone's 3HL as part of his stop in the Mid State.
During Heupel's appearance on 104.5 The Zone, he was asked by 3HL co-host Brent Dougherty what he'd be doing right now if he wasn't a football coach. Heupel, unsurprisingly, told Dougherty that he has no idea what other career he would've pursued.
"I have no idea, man, I got my degree in marketing," said Heupel.
"I thought I was going to be in the NBA in the 7th grade," added a laughing Heupel. "Sophomore year I realized I better go towards football. You start to realize there [aren't] a lot of 6'2" guys in the NBA."
It's pretty clear that it was football or bust for Heupel. There was no backup plan. There wasn't even the idea of another potential career.
That's probably why Heupel has been so successful in his football career (from player to coach). He's always been all-in. And that's the type of mindset it requires to be successful in athletics at a high level.
Heupel as an NBA player, however, is an interesting thought. Would he have been a facilitator who racks up assists? Or would he be a player who slashes to the lane and creates his own shot? It's hard to know for sure, but based on the way Heupel coaches football, I imagine there would've been a lot of points scored one way or another.
