The Detroit Lions have undergone significant positive change on the field over the last few seasons. But one major change off of the field could be on the horizon.
Lions owner Rod Wood told reporters at the NFL’s owner meetings that the team is exploring the idea of moving its training facilities and training camp site.
“We’re considering whether we’re going to continue to stay there and put more money into the facility or (if) we’d be better off looking at locations elsewhere in Metro Detroit,” Wood said. “We’d have more space for the team plus training camp for the fans. But right now, in the short run, we’re going to stay where we are, do the best we can to get as many fans in there, and have the experience as good as it can be.”
Allen Field, the Lions’ current training camp facility, currently holds a maximum capacity of just 2,500. Wood is aiming for a number much higher to open the doors for more fans to watch an exciting product.
“I’d like to have 15,000 fans there,” Wood added. “But given the constraints of where we are, that’s how we’re dealing with it right now.”
The timing of Wood’s comments are interesting especially considering the team held joint practices at the Indianapolis Colts’ training camp site last season. Wood and the Lions had a first-hand experience at the Colts’ Grand Park, which can hold in between 10,000-20,000 fans at any given practice open to the public.
“I would rather have a bigger practice facility with more fan experience than stay where we are and go on the road for training camp,” Wood noted.

It’s exciting to hear that the Lions are prioritizing fan experience during training camp. But ultimately, this change isn’t likely to happen any time soon. That being said, starting the conversation now is absolutely a positive sign.
