You can't keep everyone in free agency. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are showing this on a daily basis.
After already losing key contributors like Sean Murphy-Bunting and Mike Edwards on the defensive end (17 starts between the two in 2022), the Bucs have also lost spot-starter Keanu Neal to the Steelers.
Many fans may shake off the notion that this creates an issue for the Bucs, but Neal actually played a large role for the team as a rotational piece that was able to spot-start in eight games last season.
Injuries happen. The Buccaneers know this more than most teams. Losing a guy like Neal just makes the damage that an injury causes even worse.
Between the starts and special teams reps across the board, Neal was a quality piece in the Buccaneer secondary that Bowles was able to find a quality spot for in a deep room of defensive backs.
The loss does hurt, even if it will be easier to mitigate in the draft or with a cheap free agent given Todd Bowles' strengths and Jason Licht's draft history.
The Bucs obviously didn't have the money to keep Neal during a period where they're trying to play it very safe with the cap space, and this does seem to show with even more certainty that a safety is likely with one of Tampa's first picks in the 2023 NFL Draft.
Keanu Neal was able to help during his short time with the Buccaneers, but this team is showing that it is going to look very different in 2023.
