The Tennessee Vols' quarterback situation might be the most exciting in the nation.

Tennessee doesn't have a lot of depth at quarterback, but they have two potential superstars on the roster.

Redshirt senior Joe Milton, a physically gifted Michigan transfer with unlimited potential, is set to be the Vols' starting quarterback in 2023.

Behind Milton is true freshman quarterback Nico Iamaleava, a five-star phenom who was rated by On3 as the No. 1 overall player in the 2023 recruiting class.

Iamaleava will learn UT's offense while sitting behind Milton in 2023 before, presumably, taking over as the starter in 2024.

Earlier this week, Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel appeared on The Hard Count with On3’s J.D. Pickell and he made some extremely positive comments about Iamaleava.

“Man, extremely talented," said Heupel when asked about Iamaleava. "As talented as anybody I’ve ever been around in my coaching career. I love his competitive nature. It’s extremely important to him. He’s handled himself very professionally, from the time that he’s gotten here. And I say that meaning that he’s typically one of the first guys in the building. He’s definitely the last one to leave. He’s spending as much time as anybody in our program trying to learn and master his craft."

"His ability to understand his body position, coach it, teach it, and be able to take those coaching points and implement it into his game from rep to rep and day to day, really, really impressed with what he’s done up until this point," added Heupel. "Feel like he’s going to continue to grow and go help us win football games.”

There's been so much hype for Nico at this point that it feels like it's impossible that he'll be able to live up to expectations.

But hearing these comments from Heupel — the fact that Nico is arriving early, staying late, and yearning to be coached — suggests that Iamaleava will have no issues adjusting to life in the SEC.

The 2023 season will be critical for Iamaleava. Learning the offense while playing behind Milton (while also, hopefully for the Vols, getting some snaps in regular season games) will be massive for the California native's development.

It's been a long time since fans have been this excited about the Vols' quarterback situation. The quickest path to winning a championship in college football is having a transcendent quarterback that can take over a game. Tennessee is fortunate enough to possibly have two of those types of quarterbacks on its roster.

What a time to be a Vols fan.
