The New York Giants have made it known they aren't interested in past success, with head coach Brian Daboll understanding how hard it is to maintain prominence, and how much harder it is to scale the mountaintop.
But no one who watches, covers, or believes in the Giants should think that the 2022-2023 winning season and playoff run was a fluke.
Yet the national media continues to discredit the team, coach, and GM, with Bo Wulf of The Athletic ranking New York 18th in his post-free agency power rankings and stating the following:
"Let’s pump the brakes a little here," said Wulf. "Joe Schoen and company have very classily secured the long-term services of one of the 25 or so best quarterbacks in the league, whose breakout season under Brian Daboll in 2022 landed the Giants in the playoffs with a minus-6 point differential. Now, in their attempt to build the whole offense out of slot receivers, they’ve secured the services of Parris Campbell and Darren Waller, who haven’t played a full season in the same calendar year. They also guaranteed over $21 million to linebacker Bobby Okereke. That oughta fix everything."
Talk about Pessmistic huh?
Firstly, to think Daniel Jones is only a top-25 quarterback is ludicrous in my opinion.
Top 5? No chance
Top 10? Probably not.
But Jones' play on the field has proved to be top 15, and worthy of him being in the upper half of the league's quarterbacks.
Now where Wulf does make a good point, is when he takes a jab at the Giants acquisitions of receiver talent.
"Now, in their attempt to build the whole offense out of slot receivers, they’ve secured the services of Parris Campbell and Darren Waller, who haven’t played a full season in the same calendar year," said Wulf.
The additions of Parris Campbell and Jamison Crowder only add to a small group that includes the likes of Wan'Dale Robinson, with durability concerns amongst all of them.
But New York is likely far from done, with a draft fast approaching, and a receiver certainly on the radar.
The part of Wulf's blurb I fail to wrap my head around is the Okereke comment.
"They also guaranteed over $21 million to linebacker Bobby Okereke. That oughta fix everything," said Wulf.
Am I missing something?
Okereke is only 26, has proven durable playing in 17 games over the last two seasons, and recorded a career-best, 151 total tackles just last season.
For a unit that had practice squad players and first-round cast-offs holding down the fort in the linebacker corps last year, Okereke is like upgrading a lemon to a Lambo.
Is the team perfect?
Far from it.
But the coaching staff and front office may be amongst the best in the league.
If nothing else, the media will have to learn their lesson when it comes to doubting Brian Daboll and Joe Schoen.
