The Dallas Cowboys have moved on from running back Ezekiel Elliott… kind of.
After all, the former fourth-overall pick remains a free agent and the team has publicly indicated they're not going to close the door on a potential reunion if Zeke doesn't find the deal he's looking for in the open market.
After all, NFL teams seem to be less and less willing to sign running backs to big-time deals nowadays. If the price is low, would it be that crazy for the Cowboys to bring him in on a different role?
For obvious reasons, that's unlikely to happen. After being let go, it would be logical to assume that Zeke wants a fresh start elsewhere. But what should we make out of him still being unsigned?
"I do not know that he currently has visits scheduled," said NFL Network's Ian Rapoport via the Pat McAfee Show on Monday. "I know there's some interest. And the money's going to be tough because as you know, like, teams are not spending all the money now."
The NFL insider also mentioned that even if a deal could be facilitated because Elliott wouldn't factor into the compensation pick formula, teams "aren't really spending a lot of money now."
Regarding a potential timetable to reach a deal, Ian Rapoport mentioned he could see the former Cowboys running back waiting until after the Draft.
"So I think, I don't know this but what I think might happen with Zeke is he might wait until after the draft and if someone doesn't get the premium running back they want, he slides in there and fills the need," said the NFL insider.
That wouldn't be a surprise, especially with this year's draft class being a deep one at running back.
However, it goes to show why the "Not For Long" cliché stays alive when discussing the NFL. Not that long ago, Elliott's superstardom appeared never-ending.
Now it's tough to figure out who will end up signing him.
