The New Orleans Saints made some improvements during this off-season. They lost some depth pieces as well, but overall, it has been a productive time period.
The Saints clearly believe that they can contend for their division and in the NFC as a whole. One NFC South rival executive agrees with that sentiment.
In a Mike Sando piece from The Athletic, New Orleans got some credit from a division exec for their roster construction and moves so far this off-season.
“I’ll be honest, I think the Saints are going to be good,” an exec from a division rival said. “Offensively, with Carr dumping it off to (Alvin) Kamara, that is going to be a nightmare. Adding Jamaal Williams to go with Kamara gives them their (Mark) Ingram. You have (Chris) Olave in his second year, and Michael Thomas, depending on his health.”
"As for the defense? You still have (Cam) Jordan, Demario Davis, (Marshon) Lattimore and Dennis Allen’s scheme,” this exec said. “I like Onyemata, but their major guys at each level are coming back.”
His comments make a lot of sense.
The Saints made an upgrade at quarterback, which was their biggest downfall last season. Carr allows them to push the ball downfield more often and take care of it more consistently, too.
Jamaal Williams adds juice to the running game, and keep Juwan Johnson at tight end was an underrated move.
On defense, the defensive line lacks depth, but the high-end talent is still there at every level.
They will want to add another defensive lineman and linebacker fairly early in the draft most likely, but the secondary looks to be a massive strength once again if they stay healthy.
The Saints have put together a roster that will continue to fight for a playoff berth. Once you're in, anything can happen.
The Saints believe in themselves, and at least one rival executive does as well.
