There has been much talk about who will be playing QB for the Houston Texans in 2023.
Many assume it will be CJ Stroud, Bryce Young, or Anthony Richardson. Some have even suggested the team bring in Lamar Jackson.
However, the latest rumors coming out of New England could present Houston with another option.
Sources tell A to Z Sports that the tension between Patriots QB Mac Jones and head coach Bill Belichick is very real.
NBC Sports Boston's Tom Curran recently reported that Belichick is upset with Jones for going outside of the organization for advice on the struggling New England offense in 2022.
Jones had a down year in 2022 after a promising rookie campaign in 2021. Jones finished with just under 3,000 passing yards and 14 TD and 11 INTs in 2022.
As a rookie, Jones had almost 1,000 more passing yards than he did in his sophomore season. The young QB also had eight fewer passing TDs in 2022.
What does this have to do with the Texans?
Well, for starters, Texans GM Nick Caserio spent over two decades working with Belichick in New England. The pair are familiar with one another, which could make a hypothetical deal easier to swing.
Additionally, Jones and new Texans HC DeMeco Ryans are both University of Alabama alums.
Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk recently reported that Belichick has indeed shopped Jones to several teams this offseason. There have also been plenty of rumors about the Patriots being interested in Lamar Jackson.
If New England landed Jackson, a Jones trade would seem inevitable. Even if there is no substance to the Jackson-New England rumors, the team could still be looking to make a change at the QB position.
Why would the Texans be interested?
I'm certainly not implying that Mac Jones to Houston is a likely scenario. However, the previously mentioned connections, as well as the possibility that Caserio isn't in love with any of the rookies make it a possibility, however slim.
One advantage to trading fo Jones is it would hypothetically allow the Texans to take the best available player with the second pick in the draft. Would Caserio take a slight upgrade over Davis Mills at QB if it meant he could add an elite edge rusher? We just don't know.
Jones would almost certainly not fetch a first round pick, so the Texans could land a new QB and still get two impact players.
Jones would assuredly be an upgrade over Davis Mills, but does not have the upside that the 2023 rookie class seems to have.
What would you think about Mac Jones in Houston? Let us know!
