Back in March, the Texans added a couple of proven veterans to the defense.
Jimmie Ward followed DeMeco Ryans to Houston, providing a veteran presence to a young Texans' secondary. Denzel Perryman also joined the team after two seasons in Las Vegas. Perryman and Ward both figure to be starters in Ryans' defense.
At the time of signing, we were not provided with the full details of the deals. Now, we have learned the incentives and other details.
According to NFL insider Aaron Wilson, Ward's deal is for two years, $13M, with $8.5M guaranteed. That guarantee consists of a $4M signing bonus, $2.5M salary in 2023, and $2M in 2024 salary.
Ward will also receive a per-game active roster bonus of $29,411 for a potential season total of $500,000. Finally, Ward will receive a $250,000 bonus for playing 60% of snaps, and an additional $250K if he reaches the 70 and 80% thresholds.
As for Perryman, the veteran linebacker signed a one-year, $2.6M deal that can reach $3.5M if certain incentives are met. Similar to Ward's deal, Perryman receives hefty bonuses for meeting snap thresholds. The former Miami Hurricane will earn $300,000 for playing 60% of snaps, and an additional $300K if he reaches 70 and 80%.
The way these deals are structured, the players will be rewarded for staying healthy. Neither of the veterans has ever played a full 16 or 17-game season. In 2022, Ward and Perryman both played in just 12 games. Deals that are highly incentivized make sense for the pair of solid veterans. If they can stay healthy, both figure to play an important role on the Houston defense.
