The Detroit Lions seem to be keying in on a few different prospects with their No. 6 overall pick.
The most polarizing of the bunch is Georgia defensive tackle Jalen Carter. At one point in consideration for the first overall pick, Carter’s stock has dipped for a variety of reasons.
Carter ran into some legal trouble off of the field just before the NFL Scouting Combine. When scouts did get to take a closer look at him, Carter appeared lethargic and out of shape at Georgia’s Pro Day.
Even with these concerns, Carter’s tape is eye-popping. He has the potential to make an instant impact on the defensive line no matter were he winds up. The Lions are one possible destination for Carter and recently hosted him on a Top 30 meeting.
Detroit’s GM Brad Holmes left the visit impressed with Carter.
“He came in and he did a nice job,” Holmes said. “Again, it’s always case-by-case, came in, we enjoyed our time with him, did a nice job. I will say, even after he left his visit, I felt better about him.”
The Lions have numerous needs that can be sufficed with the player they take with the sixth pick in the draft. With that being said, Carter makes plenty of sense for Detroit at their current slot.
For the first time in decades, the Lions are favored to win the NFC North. So whichever player Detroit selects with the pick must be able to hit the ground running. If Carter is on the board when the Lions go on the clock, Holmes and company could walk away with a first-round steal.
