The Tampa Bay Buccaneers may have some questions along the offensive line, but there is zero doubt when it comes to Tristan Wirfs and wherever he plays.
The former first-rounder has been a stud ever since the moment he was selected with the 13th overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. Wirfs already has two Pro Bowls and has two All-Pro nods under his belt in just three NFL seasons. He's the best right tackle in the NFL and if someone thinks otherwise, he's easily 1A.
That's why the Buccaneers' decision to pickup Wirfs' fifth-year option was a no-brainer. Pewter Report reported Friday the Bucs plan on locking up their best offensive lineman through the 2024 season. Wirfs' stands to gain quite a bit from his excellent start, as well. Per Over The Cap, Wirfs is slated to make $18.244 million instead of $13.565 million because of his Pro Bowl selections.
The deadline to approve fifth-year options is May 3. If the Buccaneers opted against doing so then Wirfs would've become a free agent after the 2023 season, but obviously, that was never an option.
This won't be Wirfs' last big raise, either. He's easily going to become the highest-paid offensive lineman in the NFL and maybe in NFL history once the Buccaneers give him his new deal. Right now, Spotrac has Wirfs' market value at $24.7 million per year. Granted, they aren't the end-all-be-all of evaluations and have missed the mark on several occasions, but that number sounds accurate and honestly, Wirfs is worth every penny.
And, if he has a successful transition to left tackle (potentially), he could make even more, which is crazy to think about.
