The Detroit Lions have a very important job on their hands as they scramble to deal with the Jameson Williams news. Any team that learned they would be without their WR2 during one of the most important seasons in decades would be in a similar spot.
Williams is set to miss the first six games of the year for the Lions in 2023 and the team will also be without depth receiver Quintez Cephus.
There is now a major hole on the Lions for a key part of the season and a depth role that has just become available. The team needs to get busy to find a replacement or replacements fast.
Instead of waiting for the draft or signing a free agent that may not be able to move the needle in the right way, perhaps the Lions could be the team to win the DeAndre Hopkins sweepstakes.
Think about it: the Lions can't afford to let their offense suffer during the first six games with a depleted receiver room. Moves are coming to stem the bleeding, and there isn't a better player available than Hopkins at this moment.
The trade for Hopkins wouldn't be too pricey for a Lions team that has the cap space and draft capital to make a move happen, and the rest of the room isn't established enough to prevent the team from actually making a move like this one.
In addition, some fans may see this as overkill for what should amount to just six games, but 1) the Lions can't afford to start the season flat or depleted, and 2) Hopkins, Williams, and Amon-Ra St. Brown would be a dominant WR trio, something that has become more important in the modern iteration of the NFL.
The loss of Jameson Williams is going to hurt the Lions in one way or another, but there is a clear move that is still available that would save the team during the Williams suspension and then better the team once he returns.
