The Atlanta Falcons released CB Casey Hayward Jr. on Friday. The Falcons cited a failed physical as the reason they parted ways from the 11-year veteran.
Hayward is coming off of torn pectoral he suffered in Atlanta during the 2022 season. He was having a solid year before the injury sidelined him after six games.
Hayward’s best football is likely behind him, but the Bears could benefit from adding the two-time Pro Bowler. After all, Hayward recorded 17 tackles, three passes defensed and one interception in six starts with Atlanta.
A second-round selection by the Packers in the 2012 NFL Draft, Hayward would bring loads of experience to Chicago’s young cornerback room. No cornerback currently on the Bears roster has logged more than three years of NFL experience.
Assuming Hayward gets back to full strength, he would be a veteran the Bears youngsters can lean on while also adding value on the field. At 33 years old, Hayward could still be effective in a rotational role, and depth at cornerback is key in defending the offenses in today’s pass-happy NFL.
