Seahawks set at cornerback heading into NFL Draft week

The one place the Seattle Seahawks most likely won’t look early in the draft is cornerback.

Improving the defense has been a primary concern for the Seattle Seahawks heading into the NFL Draft on Thursday.

One of those positions is cornerback. But earlier this week, Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll offered assurance that the Seahawks are comfortable and confident in what they have in 2022 NFL Draft selections, Tariq Woolen and Coby Bryant.

Carroll also offered assurance in Michael Jackson, who enjoyed a breakout season in 2022 alongside the rookies in the secondary.

In total, those three played 2,972 of the team’s 3,114 cornerback snaps in 2022, via Pro Football Reference — Woolen 1,134, Jackson 1,082, and Bryant 756. And for that production, Seattle is paying a whopping $5 million at cornerback, the second lowest in the league.

Also in the mix for Seattle is Tre Brown, a backup who was drafted in 2021 and enjoyed a good season filling in for guys who faced midseason injuries. It is safe to say the Seahawks are optimistic about what they have at the cornerback position come Thursday.

“I think coming back off of this first year of seeing Tariq and Michael play together, we feel pretty good about that, and knowing that Tre didn’t have a chance to really contribute much. Coby’s addition, as well, we’re in pretty good shape right there,” coach Pete Carroll said Wednesday. “They’re going to get way better. They’re going to improve a great deal, and they played pretty good this past year in their first really go-round. I feel pretty good about that spot.”

Carroll added: “We’re always looking to add, but at least we know what we’ve got coming back.”

It was reported earlier in the week that Seattle isn't necessarily picking for fit as much as the best player available. But what remains clear, however, is that cornerback is a position the Seahawks won't worry about early. They like their group of budget producers and want to see what they can be in 2023.
