It's no secret that after Andrew Wylie left for where his offensive coordinator went in Washington, it hurt the Chiefs. He was the backup for the majority of the 2021 season, but last year he was stellar.

He was the guy protecting Mahomes' strong side, and now the guy set to do it is Lucas Niang. He is a fine player, but he wasn't as good as Wylie, and he is injury prone. He is a great backup, but not a good starter.

So, they are looking for a guy to hold it down on the right side and could do that in the draft. The thing about this draft class is it isn't as deep at tackle as it usually is, which is weird that one ESPN analyst has the Chiefs getting their right tackle late on day two. If the Chiefs want to make sure they get a legit tackle that can come in and contribute right away, they will need to take one earlier than pick 95.

Mel Kiper's pick: Tyler Steen, OT, Alabama

The 6-foot-6 Steen started 45 games for the Crimson Tide, playing both left and right tackle. The Chiefs are relying on some youth along the O-line, and Steen could be the swing tackle as a rookie.

Steen is good and had a decent college career. But, there are much better guys earlier in the draft they can grab. If you ask me, right tackle is their biggest need because of who they currently have that would be the starter.

Here is what Pro Football Focus had to say about their 106-ranked prospect in the 2023 NFL Draft:

Steen has four years of starting experience but figures to be a guard convert at the next level. He’s one of the more powerful linemen in this class and has the traits to be a plus pass-protecting guard.

The Chiefs may value wide receiver and pass rush over tackle. If so, then this pick is fine. But if they want a potential recap of the 2020 Super Bowl, then they may need to go tackle early on. Just think, they will have Niang, who has played just 534 offensive snaps in three years, and a guy in Jawaan Taylor who has never played left tackle.
