The New York Giants have had an eventful off-season. From extending Daniel Jones to trading for Darren Waller, it has not been quiet.
Another massive decision for NYG is regarding star running back Saquon Barkley. The Giants did not give Barkley a long-term extension so far during this off-season. He is one of the best talents at RB in the NFL, but contracts are a tough wager for organizations in today's league.
Not to mention, injuries have been an issue for Barkley at times during his career. That being said, last year was a great one for Saquon, and his physical ability is undeniable. As of now, he is not reporting to any team activities after the team attempted to place the franchise tag on him.
Barkley and his team don't plan on signing the tag. They want a new contract, but they aren't rushing anything on that front with the Giants, according to Barkley.
"Where do I stand with the Giants right now? It's like what someone said the other day … it's still April," Barkley said via The Morning Call’s Keith Groller. "I haven't had conversations with Joe [Schoen, the Giants GM] too much. So the best way I can handle it is to keep working. Whatever happens, happens."
"There are things I can't really control right now. All I can control is how I will wake up every morning and stay with my goals and my passion. Even though I may not be with the team right now and not in the building, I don't think anyone with the Giants is concerned about my work-ethic and my teammates aren't worried about how I'm preparing."
This should give Giants fans some faith that a new deal may come. Barkley is going to stay in great shape while not training with the team, and there does not seem to be hostility between the two sides. They both seem willing to negotiate after the draft to see if they can come to a long-term agreement.
