The Pittsburgh Steelers are obviously in an age of change, coming into only the second season of a new quarterback, and with different names and faces atop the organization.
That alone would cause some fans to be skeptical about the outlook of the franchise, particularly when an organization known for continuity suddenly undergoes such dramatic developments.
But in today's pre-draft press conference, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin joined general manager Omar Khan to discuss a bevy of topics surrounding the draft, players, and what everyone is here to see, organizational changes.
When asked about being open to transition and changes, Tomlin said the following:
"I think a cool thing is we haven't been running away from the differences of transition. We've been open to it. Just like I was talking about a year ago, we were transitioning at quarterback and the uneasiness that the feeling that can be positive fuel for us," said Tomlin.
"We've gone through a transition here at a significant role and, you know, we'd be remiss if we didn't have an urgency about it. And also just be open to the differences that could help us improve," added Tomlin when speaking about the change of general managers and quarterbacks.
"And I've been excited about working with some of the new guys and some of the guys that aren't new but are in a new role. And just been open to, doing things differently," said coach Tomlin.
"I think, particularly guys like us who have been in roles or been in this organization, for an extended period of time, It's a natural inclination to get resistant to new thoughts and ideas and approaches, and that's something that you can fall into and that's something that we're consciously resisting because we might miss an opportunity for improvement or get better and that's something that comes with transition," Tomlin finished with.
Now that may seem like a whole lot of nothing, But what coach Tomlin is saying underneath the surface is very important, and perhaps foreshadows the draft and seasons to come.
Trade rumors have already been proven to not be so, well rumorous, and Tomlin may be pointing to developments in the hiring of coaches, something that many Steelers fans would appreciate when it comes to the offensive coordinator position.
While it may take some time time to feel the advantages, the Steelers obviously believe change is good. Time will tell what this change entails, and the clock is ticking, as the draft is just days away.
