That trade, which Rodgers badly wants to happen, could happen at any time. Most analysts expect it to happen before the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft gets underway on Friday.
While the Rodgers trade — if it happens– will be the big Packers story this week that everyone's talking about, could Green Bay make another big move at the quarterback position?
CBS Sports recently suggested that Green Bay could be an ideal landing spot for veteran quarterback Ryan Tannehill. Recent reports have indicated that the Tennessee Titans aren't opposed to trading the soon-to-be 35-year-old quarterback.
Tannehill, who reached the Pro Bowl in 2019, appears to be nearing the end of his career and the Titans are about to go through at least a mini-rebuild. With Tannehill's contract expiring after the 2023 season, it makes sense for the Titans to try to get something out of the former Texas A&M standout.
From CBS Sports: If/when they finalize Aaron Rodgers' trade to the Jets, the Packers figure to be in the market for veteran insurance behind new QB1 Jordan Love, with only Danny Etling (zero career NFL snaps) also under contract at the position. Tannehill could make for an ideal mentor and No. 2, hailing from the same Titans system that produced coach Matt LaFleur. Green Bay also has a decent amount of cap space ($21.5M) entering the draft.
The logic here makes sense. The Packers could use a veteran behind Jordan Love. But Tannehill would have to be open to that role (remember, he created quite a controversy last summer when he suggested it wasn't his job to mentor rookie quarterback Malik Willis).
Tannehill is set to earn $27 million in base salary in 2023. That would be quite a bit of cash to pay a backup quarterback. I can't see the Packers allocating that amount of cap space to a backup — even if it's just a one-year deal that won't impact the salary cap beyond 2023. This seems like a longshot for Green Bay.
