The Dallas Cowboys have become one of the best drafting teams in the NFL. Team owner Jerry Jones may get the lion's share of the credit, but a lot belongs to Vice President of Player Personnel Will McClay also.

Dallas held its pre-draft conference on Monday. Jones took a moment near the end to pay homage to McClay and what he's done for the Cowboys.

Jones mentioned McClay's responsibility for managing scouts out on the road and how his people skills work wonders in him getting his job done. He was then asked if McClay could be the team's general manager one day, and his answer was a doozy.

"I can’t make him the general manager. We have one. It’s tenured," Jones said jokingly. "If Will can write those checks, I might consider it."

That says plenty about what McClay means to the front office in Dallas.

McClay came to the Cowboys organization in 2009 and was the team's Pro Scouting Coordinator for two seasons. After three years as the Director of Football Research, McClay was named the Assistant Director of Player Personnel in 2014. Before McClay took on his current role, McClay was the Senior Director of Pro/College Scouting for the Cowboys for two seasons (2015-2016).

The last decade and a half have seen the Cowboys bring in talents like Dez Bryant, Tyron Smith, Zack Martin, DeMarcus Lawrence, Ezekiel Elliott, Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, Trevon Diggs, and Micah Parsons to name a few. So, it's safe to say that McClay has this acquiring talent thing down.

Jones will likely never give up that general manager role at any point with the Cowboys. However, if by some chance he does, his replacement is already in-house.
