Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Poles has been one of the busiest executives in the NFL this offseason. Poles continued to wheel and deal in the first round by swapping picks with the Philadelphia Eagles, but one NFL insider believes he could have another big move up his sleeve.
NFL network’s Ian Rapoport joined the Pat McAfee Show on Friday to discuss some of the draft’s juiciest storylines. One topic that came up in conversation was the 32nd pick in the draft, currently owned by the Pittsburgh Steelers as part of the Chase Claypool trade with Chicago.
Rapoport says there have been a handful of teams in contact with the Steelers about moving up to the first pick in the second round. The Bears were among those teams mentioned.
“Based on the teams — Atlanta, Tennessee, Chicago, the Rams, a lot of teams who are calling up,” said Rapoport. “Maybe the Titans for a quarterback, but I would be surprised if the rest would work. I would imagine that was for other positions.”
He went on to mention that if a team really wanted to trade up for a quarterback they would have done so in the back end of the first round on Thursday evening. So it would make sense for the Bears to trade up and reclaim the pick they shipped off for Claypool.
Credit Poles and Chicago’s front office for their aggressive mindset, whether or not they are able to pull this trade off. The Bears head into Friday night with three picks, two of which come in the second round (53, 61).
