The Dallas Cowboys were jumped by the Buffalo Bills who took tight end Dalton Kincaid out of Utah, who was certainly in play when it came to them addressing this particular area.
It didn't take long to get it taken care of on Day 2 as the Cowboys took Michigan tight end, Luke Schoonmaker with the 58th pick.
Schoonmaker played in 23 games for Michigan and tallied 637 yards and seven touchdowns on 54 receptions.
At 6'5" and 251 pounds, Schoonmaker was versatile as a Wolverine playing 315 snaps as a true tight end, 134 in the slot, and 20 on the outside. He's also a pretty good athlete with a 33.5-inch vertical jump and a 10'7" in the broad jump.
A to Z Sports' Tyler Browning's breakdown of Schoonmaker:
Have seen him split out as a power slot, has been used inline and has been used as a H-Back. Versatile player for the offense. Fluidness/Flexibility: Looks a bit stiff in the hips for my liking. Not a very fluid mover. Vertical Threat: Can threaten defenses up the seam if a LB is matched up against him. YAC Ability: Very limited here. Won’t make defenders miss in the open field. Is not elusive, don’t see him take on contact. Physicality: Has shown physicality at the point of attack, however that physicality dies off throughout the rep. Rarely will you see him finish a block. Explosiveness: Takes a bit to get to top gear which is evidenced by his 10-yard split. Ran a 1.62 which is good for 69th percentile.
The Athletics' Dane Brugler's scouting report on Schoonmaker:
Natural size/speed athlete with a solid build … smooth, punctual route runner and coordinated in and out of his breaks … lulls defenders with his stride length … releases cleanly off the line and into his routes … terrific body control to adjust his target window and quickly become a ball carrier after the catch … flashes strength in his hands to physically move defenders from the spot … showed his agility as a pass blocker (limited sample size) … efficiently engages linebackers and keep them busy to spring runs … improved use of angles as a stalk blocker … looked comfortable aligning all over the offense … only modest college production, but he stepped up as a senior because of injuries.
