It sure feels like this has been said a lot over the past few days, but the Detroit Lions don't care about your mock drafts or conventional draft thought.

It seems like every pick so far during this draft has gone against what most people believed would happen, and the first pick of the second round is nothing different.

Rather than addressing defense again; the biggest need for the roster, the Lions targeted the offense again with the selection of Iowa tight end Sam LaPorta.

This is a bold move for a Lions franchise that is already in some hot water with its fans after two picks that did little to address the biggest needs for the roster.

LaPorta was an extremely talented college tight end and should be able to do a lot in the NFL in an offense that is going to get him into space and make plays with his athleticism, but how is this going to help the Lions keep points off the board for their opponents?

Everyone knows this team is going to score points. Scoring points was never the issue for the Lions in 2022. Opponents scoring points at will was what kept Detroit out of the playoffs last season, and the first three picks do little to change that.

A tight end could pan out well down the road, but the history of rookie tight ends mixed with the lack of pressing need at the moment is going to make this a pick that turns heads again in the wrong ways if the Lions fail to address some other needs before the night is over.
