The Denver Broncos added a big play threat to the roster on Friday night.

Denver selected Oklahoma Sooners wide receiver Marvin Mims, 5-foot-11/183 lbs, with the No. 63 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.

The Broncos traded the No. 68 and No. 139 picks to the Detroit Lions for the No. 63 and No. 183 picks.

In Mims, the Broncos are getting a wide receiver that caught 54 passes for 1,083 yards and six touchdowns this past season. He averaged 20.1 yards per catch in 2022 after averaging 22.0 yards per catch in 2021.

In other words, Mims, who ran a 4.38 in the 40-yard dash, is a dangerous big-play threat.

The one downside when it comes to Mims is that his route tree was a bit limited in Jeff Lebby's offense at Oklahoma. The Sooners run an offense similar to the old Baylor offense which utilizes choice routes and wider splits. Mims will have to expand his route tree to find success in the NFL, but he's far from the first college wide receiver that's faced that battle.

Here's the draft profile on Mims via NFL.com: Mims is a long-striding wideout who will primarily line up inside, but he has the potential to be moved around to mismatch speed-deficient coverage. He ran a limited route tree at Oklahoma, but he has the athletic qualities to expand on it at the next level. He’s athletic in space and dangerous with the ball in his hands, but he’s likely to see the 50/50 throws tilt in the other direction. Has can work on all three levels of the field and is an above average punt returner. Mims has just average size and strength, but his ability to create explosive plays could push him into a Day 2 selection and a starting role in the future.

The Broncos needed to add some offensive firepower to the roster and they certainly did that by landing Mims late in the second round.
