The Dallas Cowboys did exactly what they needed to do on their defensive line with the selection of defensive tackle Mazi Smith. However, a much-needed presence on the second level of their defense was also high on the Cowboys' priority list in the 2023 NFL Draft.
Enter DeMarvion Overshown, a five-year player at Texas, who was snagged with the 90th pick in the third round. The 2022 first-team All-Big 12 performer has a chance to be a real asset to Dan Quinn's scheme with his unique skill set.
Now, let's see exactly what Overshown can do.
The most unique thing about Overshown's game is his versatility. He was a five-star safety coming out of high school and converted to linebacker by his junior season at Texas in 2020.
Overshown was a movable chess piece for the Longhorns logging 1,605 snaps in the box, 205 on the defensive line, 317 in the slot, 52 at free safety, and 11 at cornerback. So, in Dan Quinn's scheme that's all about multiple looks, Overshown can continue spreading his talents across the defense.
When it comes to defending the run, Overshown is decisive in his attack and shoots through gaps quickly, and is a sure tackler. He can cover running backs out of the backfield with his ability to move sideline to sideline and against wide receivers with his range and instincts from his days as a safety. In 332 coverage snaps last season, Overshown didn't allow a single touchdown.
Overshown does another thing well, get after the quarterback. He recorded 52 pressures, 30 hurries, 13 quarterback hits, and nine sacks according to Pro Football Focus. Every season at Texas, Overshown's pass-rush grade improved and it topped out at 73.9 in 2022.
There is room for improvement with Overshown.
He needs to get a bit stronger so that he can set the edge better against the run. Also, his aggression can lead to some missed tackles in open space, and that's a killer in the NFL.
The upside for Overshown is through the roof, and it'll be intriguing to see how he can develop and contribute in his first year.
