The Detroit Lions were massive winners on Day 2 of the 2023 NFL Draft. It felt like every pick had a clear role to serve en route to a hopeful playoff appearance in the upcoming season, and most of the picks were applauded by the media as a whole.
While the Lions as a team did win, Jeffri Chadiha of NFL.com did declare that one very important member of the Lions is one of the biggest losers of the draft so far.
Chadiha listed Lions Pro Bowl quarterback Jared Goff at second under the draft losers category. It doesn't take long to say why. Here is the reasoning behind this decision:
"Though it helped Brad Holmes jump into the "winners" tier above, the decision to draft Hendon Hooker creates an intriguing situation for Goff moving forward. Hooker became a trendy prospect as the pre-draft evaluations gained steam, and he even scheduled a visit to the Lions. Now that he's officially going to be on the roster, the question of what Holmes sees in Hooker becomes a lot more critical. Holmes made it clear earlier this offseason that he's not afraid to take a young quarterback, sit him behind an established starter and then see what happens down the road. That apparently is exactly what he's about to do.
Hooker has his issues — he's 25 years old, recovering from ACL surgery and in need of serious development — but Goff, who was traded to Detroit in 2021, has just two years left on the deal he signed with the Rams in 2019. That's enough time for Goff to either continue playing at a high enough level that he secures another big extension or to give Holmes ample reason to see if Hooker can be a cheaper solution to running this team in the future. Whatever happens, the potential for this situation to get complicated is high."
Chadiha is right here in some ways. Hooker is a great college quarterback that could put pressure on a starter based on his high upside and success in college.
However, this isn't news to Goff. The Lions have been clear throughout the entire offseason that a quarterback is on the table. Taking a quarterback in the third round that is dealing with an ACL tear is not exactly something that should keep Goff up at night. This is a future move, not one that changes anything in the present.
The Lions are obviously committed to Jared Goff and have done everything in their power to build a roster to compete in 2023. None of that was done with Hooker playing in mind.
Everything beyond this season is where Chadiha is right. This will get messy once the Lions go through their hopeful playoff run and Hooker becomes healthy. A competition will begin then, but as for now, Goff being a loser in this spot is probably a bit too future-focused. A lot can change between now and then.
This was still the right move for Detroit as they look for as many ways as possible to stay relevant and shake off the stink of losing that has plagued the team for the better part of 30 years.
