Seattle Seahawks select Jerrick Reed II with a sixth-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft
Seattle added to its defensive back group with its six-round selection of Jerrick Reed II.
With pick No. 198, the Seattle Seahawks added depth to the safety position by selecting Jerrick Reed II out of New Mexico Saturday afternoon.
Reed is the first player from New Mexico selected in the NFL Draft in the last four seasons. And if he pans out in Seattle, he will play a nice depth-chart role for the Seahawks throughout late summer and training camp.
Let's see what he could bring to the table moving forward.
Reed has an interesting skill set.
He is extremely versatile and he is outstanding in the run game when he needs to be. One of his most beneficial skills is his ability to locate the ball quickly and make plays on the ball downfield.
Reed has great play-recognition skills. And he can quickly adjust his positioning and coverage to meet the need. What really helps his game is how effective he is at keeping the play in front of him. Most safeties struggle to keep the action in front, and that is just something that appears to come naturally to him.
Reed's biggest weakness is his strength. His frame lacks size and often he is easily blocked. Sometimes he can overplay his position in an attempt to make a play. That can leave gaps in coverage because of the aggressiveness he plays with.
Overall, Reed is a player who will battle for his roster spot in training camp. If everything goes right, he could develop into a solid rotation piece to a Seahawks defense that is attempting to reshape itself ahead of the 2023 NFL season.
