This draft is just as important for the Kansas City Chiefs as last years was. The last time they tried defending their Super Bowl title, they were one game short of doing so but fell to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers big time.
This time if they draft well, they can not only defend this title but have enough young pieces to potentially keep it going. Obviously, they won't win the championship every year, but building a young core through the draft will definitely help.
They did some of that last year while they grabbed guys that started and made huge plays in both the AFC Championship game and the Super Bowl. One of the guys that we can say is the future of this team is George Karlaftis, who had six sacks last season in his rookie year.
Edge is still a big need, even after drafting him and signing Charles Omenihu in free agency. Luckily for them, even at pick 31, they can still grab a guy who has the potential to be a part of an elite duo with Karlaftis, and he is a Kansas City native.
Felix Anudike-Uzomah, the edge from Kansas State can be just that. If he is available, the Chiefs could snag him, and I think most Chiefs fans would love him. Here is what Pro Football Focus thinks of his game – what he is good at, what his role could be, and what he needs to improve on:
Bend is one of the most coveted traits for an edge rusher for a reason. Being able to consistently get underneath offensive tackles the way Anudike-Uzomah can make life a lot easier. Anudike-Uzomahtape this past fall proved you don’t want him kicked inside over tackles, but that was already evident with his skill set. He’s an edge rusher who can handle an every-down workload, should you want to give it to him. While Anudike-Uzomah is never going to be a true hard edge setter, stacking, and shedding is a necessary part of the position. Right now he’s much more worried about finding ball carriers instead of stopping tackles in their tracks.
An edge rusher isn't the Chiefs' biggest need. If you ask me, it's their third biggest need behind wide receiver and right tackle. However, it is still something they absolutely need.
Getting a guy with the skill set of Anudike-Uzomah to pair with the skill set of Karlaftis would be great. They both have huge potential and could be the pair the Chiefs have been looking for for a while.
The best part is, they could create a future elite duo for cheap. All it cost is a first-round draft pick, and his contract won't be much at all.
