The Detroit Lions have finally made it to the end of the 2023 NFL Draft. The past three days have been filled with highs and lows, but overall the product has been very promising for a playoff run in the upcoming season.
Immediate starters were usually the name of the game with most of the picks, however, several players should be in interesting developmental spots for the future as well.
So, without further ado, let's check out the Lions' post-draft roster. Note: Single asterisks (*) represent 2023 draft picks.
Quarterback
- Jared Goff
- Hendon Hooker*
- Nate Sudfeld
The skinny: The addition of Hendon Hooker may be exciting, but this is still a room that is obviously led by Jared Goff with a win-now mentality. However, it will be fun to see how Hendon Hooker progresses in such an explosive system once he is healthy.
Running back
- Greg Bell
- Jahmyr Gibbs*
- Jermar Jefferson
- David Montgomery
- Craig Reynolds
- Jason Cabinda (FB)
The skinny: David Montgomery is the top dog for now, but the Lions trading D'Andre Swift and drafting Jahmyr Gibbs so early says a lot about how they view the rookie. Expect this battle to be tight for the top spot and for the third role during the regular season.
Wide receiver
- Maurice Alexander
- Trinity Benson
- Stanley Berryhill
- Antoine Green*
- Marvin Jones Jr.
- Tom Kennedy
- Kalif Raymond
- Josh Reynolds
- Amon-Ra St. Brown
- Jameson Williams
The skinny: There are a lot of bodies here that are competing for very few real spots. There are probably five guys that are already locked into roster spots, so the battle to see who else makes it onto the roster (especially early in the season during the Jameson Williams suspension) will be very interesting.
Tight end
- Derrick Deese Jr.
- Sam LaPorta*
- James Mitchell
- Brock Wright
- Shane Zylstra
The skinny: Sam LaPorta is the most interesting name on this list. The Lions invested in him very early, so it stands to reason that they will do as much as they can to get the ball in his athletic hands as early in the season as possible to have him ready for the playoffs. However, tight end is notoriously difficult for rookies to find success with, so don't be surprised if LaPorta is buried on the depth chart to start the season.
Offensive line
- Ross Peirschbacher (C)
- Frank Ragnow (C)
- Kayode Awosika (G)
- Jonah Jackson (G)
- Logan Stenberg (G)
- Halapoulivaati Vaitai (G)
- Graham Glasgow (OL)
- Colby Sorsdal* (OL)
- Taylor Decker (T)
- Obinna Eze (T)
- Matt Nelson (T)
- Darrin Paulo (T)
- Penei Sewell (T)
The skinny: Ending the draft with 13 offensive linemen is certainly on par with what we all expected from the Lions. There probably won't be many surprises here with the final roster, but making sure Jared Goff is as protected as possible should lead to a fierce competition for the backup roles. Versatility will matter a lot here.

Defensive line
- Isaiah Buggs
- John Cominsky
- Charles Harris
- Aidan Hutchinson
- Benito Jones
- Alim McNeill
- Romeo Okwara
- Levi Onwuzurike
- Josh Paschal
- Demetrius Taylor
- Brodric Martin*
The skinny: It is almost surprising that the Lions didn't invest more at this position in the draft. There are some good names here that are trending in the right direction but this still looks like one of the weaker positions on the roster right now.
Outside linebacker
- Alex Anzalone
- James Houston
- Julian Okwara
- Anthony Pittman
- Malcolm Rodriguez
The skinny: This is another position where it looked like the team would spend at least one pick to bring up the quality of play. Look for at least one free agent to join the mix to up the quality of play before training camp starts.
Inside linebacker
- Derrick Barnes
- Jack Campbell
- Jalen Reeves-Maybin
The skinny: Jack Campbell is probably going to be the headliner here. You don't take a guy so much earlier than everyone else if you don't expect for him to fix one of your biggest weaknesses by himself.
Cornerback
- Khalil Dorsey
- Will Harris
- Jerry Jacobs
- Chase Lucas
- Mac McCain III
- Emmanuel Moseley
- Saivion Smith
- Cameron Sutton
- Jarren Williams
- Brian Branch (DB)*
- C.J. Gardner-Johnson (DB)
The skinny: This group is the one that probably improved the most from free agency and the draft as a whole. Versatility may be the biggest selling point with plenty of players that can essentially line up anywhere and find massive amounts of success. This group will define the season for the Lions in 2023.

Safety
- Brady Breeze
- Kerby Joseph
- Ifeatu Melifonwu
- Tracy Walker III
The skinny: No major changes here from the draft, but it is fair to assume that some of these players could lose out on some reps to the defensive backs that could line up in safety roles from time to time.
Special teams
- Michael Badgley (K)
- Jack Fox (P)
- Jake McQuaide (LS)
The skinny: Again, another position with no changes, but it makes sense that this group would stay together after a quality 2022 season. Depth pieces may come in to training camp to keep the level of competition high but don't expect any changes.
