When he was first hired, Ryan Poles made it 100% clear that his preferred method of building a team is through the draft. So, it's no surprise he made another first-round trade on Thursday night.
Per ESPN's Field Yates, Poles traded the ninth overall pick to the Philadelphia Eagles for their 10th overall pick and a 2024 fourth-rounder. The Bears now have eight picks in the first four rounds of the 2024 draft thanks to the multiple moves they've made over the last year or so.
And, to make things even better, they addressed a major need at No. 10 by drafting Tennessee RT Darnell Wright, per Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer.
Wright immediately solidifies the Bears offensive line
This is exactly what the offensive line needed: a true right tackle.
That's exactly what Wright is and, the best part of the selection is that he's built for the type of offense that Bears offensive coordinator Luke Getsy likes to run. Wright is built for a play-action/zone-heavy scheme and he should be able to come in and start on Day 1.
The Athletic's Dane Brugler had the following to say about Wright, who was First-Team All-SEC in 2022:
Overall, Wright will get himself into trouble when he sacrifices technique for his nasty demeanor, but he naturally defaults to his raw power and body control to consistently win in both the run and passing game. He is a plug-and-play right tackle, and some teams have him on their draft board as a starting guard. – Dane Brugler, The Athletic
The move keeps Teven Jenkins on the inside of the offensive line, which is what suits him best. Overall, the Bears have made a great decision that will not only help keep Justin Fields upright and the running game performing at a high level, but it's a move that will allow the Bears offense to keep growing, which is a scary thought for the rest of the division and conference.
