The first round of the 2023 NFL Draft is finally in the books and the Detroit Lions are left to plan their next moves as they look for the best path back to the playoffs.
Round One was a little off the beaten path in the terms of initial expectations for the roster, but Brad Holmes has earned a certain level of trust from his team's fans before anyone gets too worried about any picks.
While there is still a lot of time before we see what this final roster looks like, there is an obvious change that should be coming based on the fallout of the first round.
Let's be honest, Alabama running back Jahmyr Gibbs at 12 was a major surprise. The Lions already have two quality running backs on their roster and the position doesn't bring that much value in the first round.
David Montgomery just got paid and D'Andre Swift was supposed to take a larger role without Jamaal Williams in the backfield, right?
That dream appears to be dead. With Gibbs coming in and having the talent to soak up a lot of carries and even more receptions, the need for Swift has essentially disappeared.
Yes, it is nice to have three good running backs with two that are great on third down, but investing this much in Gibbs and paying Montgomery fringe-starter money says everything about how the Lions see their current depth chart.
Swift is far too talented to be the forgotten third man in an offense like this, even if his presence protects against the risks of injuries well.
The Lions probably started getting calls for the former second-rounder as soon as the Gibbs announcement was made. At this point, they probably need to take the best offer they can get. The leverage is going to disappear quickly once the draft ends and teams address their need for the position in other ways.
Swift may be talented but he isn't long for this team. A trade is the best option for both parties.
