It is officially day two of the 2023 NFL Draft. Accordingly, mock drafts for rounds two and three are flying. Welcome to the best one you'll read today.
For the New Orleans Saints, they found a balance of value and need in round one when they drafted Clemson DL Bryan Bresee. Bresee is an ultra-athletic defensive lineman with impressive upside. He also fills a major hole on the inside of the Saints defensive line.
Now, on day two, they need to continue the trend of making smart selections that can improve the team immediately. There's still plenty of talent on the board, and the Saints must take advantage.
Round 2, Pick 40: Darnell Washington, Tight End, Georgia
Washington is still on the board as the second round begins tonight, along with Notre Dame TE Michael Mayer. It seems like Mayer may go off the board before the Saints get back on the clock. In that scenario, the Saints opt for another physical "freak" in Washington.
The former Georgia TE looms large at 6'7" and 265 pounds. His blocking was elite at his position at the collegiate level, and he possesses intriguing upside in the passing game. His run-after-catch ability flashed often on film when Washington got the football in his hands. At his size, you don't see many prospects move like he does.
Washington would step in for the Saints and play an immediate role behind Juwan Johnson as the top blocking TE for New Orleans. He could blossom into a TE1 for the Saints in the future.
Round 3, Pick 71: Joe Tippmann, Offensive Lineman, Wisconsin
The Saints make another value move. Offensive line may not jump off the page as a need for the Saints, but their depth could certainly improve. Tippmann helps with that at multiple spots on the OL. He was a center at Wisconsin, spending a bit of time at offensive guard as well.
Not to mention, he has the requisite size to be a depth offensive tackle in the NFL. With the OL coaching staff that the Saints have, he could develop into a useful chess piece on the line for New Orleans.
Tippmann could go before this selection. If he makes it to the Saints' third-round pick, though, they should jump on the opportunity.
