The Las Vegas Raiders gave themselves a bit of a Valentine's Day gift today.
They decided to offciailyl release quarterback Derek Carr.
Now, that does leave a gaping hole at the position that means the most in the NFL. That being said, the move did open up plenty of salary cap flexibility and potential for the future of the position.
The end to the Carr-Raiders saga has been molding for weeks, but it is officially here. So, what did the Raiders receive immediately after cutting the veteran QB?
Firstly, they gained $29.35 million in cap space for this off-season.
That total for the Raiders now sits around $50 million.
That is plenty of space to make some major moves to a roster that struggled at times this season. In particular, it can be used to bolster a defense that was one of the worst overall units in the AFC over the course of the season.
That money could also be invested in a new QB as well, though. Veterans will be on the table, but the Raiders also own a top ten selection in this year's NFL Draft.
A rookie quarterback for Josh McDaniels to work with could be at the top of their draft wishlist.
Then, most of that cap space could be used to make upgrades elsewhere on the depth chart like interior offensive line, cornerback, and interior defensive line.
The Raiders, truly, gained a new beginning by moving on from Carr.
He had some high moments with the organization, but it was tough to see Las Vegas winning a Super Bowl with him at QB.
Both sides have a fresh start, and the Raiders need to take advantage of that immediately.
