The Miami Dolphins made a smart addition to the franchise on Monday.

Earlier this month, the Dolphins hired former Denver Broncos head coach Vic Fangio to serve as Mike McDaniel's defensive coordinator.

Fangio was hired after the Dolphins moved on from Josh Boyer.

Boyer, who served as Miami's defensive coordinator from 2020 to 2021 under Brian Flores, was originally retained by McDaniel in 2022.

On Monday, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that the Dolphins are adding Los Angeles Chargers defensive coordinator Renaldo Hill to Fangio's staff.

Hill will serve as Miami's defensive pass game coordinator.

This is a step down for Hill, but according to Schefter, Chargers head coach Brandon Staley allowed the move to happen out of respect for Fangio, his former boss in Denver.

This is quite a get for Fangio and the Dolphins. Landing a sitting defensive coordinator to serve as defensive passing game coordinator is a surprising move. But it makes Miami a better team.

Hill worked as Fangio's defensive backs coach in Denver for two seasons so there's plenty of familiarity between the two coaches.

The Dolphins weren't far away last season. They reached the playoffs in McDaniel's first season, despite dealing with key injuries at the quarterback position.

Adding Fangio and Hill to the staff should allow the Dolphins to take that next step and make some serious noise in the AFC in 2023.
