The Kansas City Chiefs got clutch performances from their defense throughout this past season.
In the second half of the year, they were one of the most dominant units in the entire NFL. They were arguably a top three defense in the AFC. A big reason for that was their play of star defensive lineman Chris Jones.
He was at his healthiest during the back half of the season, and that showed up big time for the Chiefs.
From Pro Football Focus, Jones was the best interior defensive lineman in football this season while on the field.
Jones overtook Aaron Donald's reign when it comes to interior line play. Jones was an absolute menace for defenses to try to handle, and not many did it effectively.
The Chiefs lineman finished the season with 52 total tackles, 17.5 sacks, and 4 pass deflections. Jones affects both sides of the game.
Against the pass, offensive lines must scheme to keep him in check. Clearly, that didn't work anyway in most cases.
Against the run game, he uses his size/speed combo to keep running backs in check quite often. Interior offensive linemen didn't have fun against Jones, and the Chiefs prefer to keep it like that.
Going forward, Jones, along with L'Jarius Sneed and Nick Bolton, are the building blocks for a team that will look to repeat as Super Bowl Champions next season.
