The Las Vegas Raiders have to make a big one regarding the future of their quarterback position during the offseason. Some have theorized Aaron Rodgers, others theorized one free-agent option. But staring the Raiders down is the inexpensive and not-very-good Jarrett Stidham.
Using Stidham as a bridge quarterback is the likely option, but it wouldn't be ideal for the Raiders. According to team insider Hondo Carpenter, Stidham isn’t the long-term plan, and the Raiders would be “disappointed” if they enter next season with him as the starter.
“I understand fans who maybe like what they see in Jarrett [Stidham], or think he’s cheaper. But when you read the tea leaves on the coach and administration, if they end up going into next year with him as their head guy, I can guarantee you that was not the plan, and they are disappointed,” Carpenter said this week on his Sports Illustrated podcast.
Stidham, like most backup-level quarterbacks, played well one week against the 49ers and fell off a cliff the next week. If the Raiders walk into next season with him, they will look like an organization with no direction and no philosophy.
Imagine, the Raiders would have let Derek Carr walk out the door for nothing while choosing to run with a backup-level signal caller. An outcome like that one would be laughable.
Only time will tell if Stidham remains the No. 1 guy. But as things stand now, things aren't looking promising.
