Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields doesn't have a lot of requests when it comes to moves that the team needs to make this offseason, but there is one particular player that he wants to see in the Windy City in 2023.
Fields appeared on "Pardon My Take" this week to discuss a variety of topics.
During the conversation, Fields said that he'd love it if Chicago drafted Ohio State wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba.
The two players were teammates at Ohio State in 2020.
In Fields' scenario, the Bears would trade the No. 1 overall pick for multiple picks. So it's not like he wants Smith-Njigba with the top overall selection.
"I've seen him in action," said Fields about his former Buckeyes teammate. "I've seen how he can separate himself like that. His body control is crazy…I'm hoping he falls to us somehow."
Fields acknowledged that the Bears also have other needs they need to address — specifically in the trenches. But he'd still love to have his old college teammate taking the field with him in Chicago.
If the Bears select Smith-Njigba, it would give Chicago a Joe Burrow/Ja'Marr Chase type of connection (Burrow and Chase played together at LSU).
That's not to say that drafting Smith-Njigba would guarantee that the Bears are going to win the NFC in 2023, but we've seen that reuniting quarterbacks with their wide receivers from college can be fruitful.
The Bengals needed help in the trenches when they took Chase in the 2021 NFL Draft. And they were criticized for taking a wide receiver over an offensive lineman. But that move ended up paying off in a big way for Cincinnati. I don't see why it couldn't also work out for the Bears. It's certainly a move that Chicago general manager Ryan Poles should consider.
