Tennessee Vols legend and Pro Football Hall of Famer Peyton Manning reminded viewers on Monday night during the Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs Dallas Cowboys playoff game that he's not a fan of kickers.
During the ManningCast broadcast on ESPN 2, Manning showed his frustration with kickers after Dallas kicker Brett Maher missed his third straight extra point of the game (he later missed a fourth PAT).
"You've got to be kidding me, why are we kicking it," said a miffed Peyton after Maher's missed extra point in the second quarter.
Fans on social media immediately brought up a famous Peyton interview from 2003 that might have been the moment his disdain for kickers was born.
In early 2003, Peyton and the Indianapolis Colts were eliminated from the playoffs after a 41-0 loss to the New York Jets.
Shortly after the loss, Colts kicker Mike Vanderjagt did an interview in Toronto where he criticized Manning for his lack of emotion. He also criticized then-Colts head coach Tony Dungy for not being a motivator.
Peyton was asked about the comments during the Pro Bowl shortly after the interview. Manning called Vanderjagt an idiot kicker multiple times and said he got "liquored up" for the interview.
Here's the video of the classic interview.
Legendary.
Vanderjagt apologized for the comments and all parties eventually moved on (Vanderjagt played three more seasons for the Colts after those comments).
Manning, however, wasn't lying when he said that Vanderjagt ruined kickers forever for him. We saw on Monday night that Peyton still has no patience for missed kicks.
