We made it. It's playoff football season. And to make it even better, the Dallas Cowboys are scheduled to play on Monday Night Football.

In the process, they'll get a chance to erase a winless streak against Tom Brady. Today, as we did all regular season, we'll take a look at what's the best bet to make.

Let's dive in.

We closed the regular season 13-4 (!!!) betting Cowboys' games in this weekly series of Betting the Cowboys. Now we try to translate it to playoff football.

Last year, we had a positive record of 9-7 on this weekly series. That's a 56.3% hit rate, over the goal of hitting 52.4% which would be our breakeven rate on -110 odds.

The odds

  • Spread: Dallas Cowboys -2.5 (-110)
  • Moneyline: Dallas Cowboys -140 / Tampa Bay Buccaneers +120
  • Total: 45.5

The public isn't afraid of a large number

Per Action Network, only 44% of the bets are on Dallas. That's not a surprise considering the public loves home underdogs, especially if they happen to be quarterbacked by Mr. Tom Brady.

The Cowboys have remained favorites though, even if the spread has been knocked down from three points.

Trends

  • The Cowboys are 1-3-1 against the spread (ATS) in their last five games overall.
  • The Cowboys are 0-3-1 ATS vs. a team with a losing record.
  • The Buccaneers are 2-7-1 ATS in their last 10 home games.
  • Over is 5-2 in the Cowboys' last seven games overall.

The pick: A stern reminder is in order

I get it, Cowboys Nation. I get it.

This team has done so poorly in the postseason for almost three decades now that once the regular season is over, fans start bracing for disappointment and start getting ready for an inevitable loss.

The Cowboys aren't supposed to win in the playoffs. Oh, and they're facing Tom Brady! He is supposed to win in the playoffs. It's his thing!

It's easy to think about that and just bet the house on Tampa Bay. However, we've been doing the same thing all year in this weekly series. We're betting the numbers. And to me, it's clear we should back the Cowboys. Let's take a quick look at DVOA, an efficiency metric put together by Football Outsiders.

Cowboys: 6th overall, 15th offense, 2nd defense.

Buccaneers: 17th overall, 16th offense, 13th defense.

The Cowboys will be able to pressure Tom Brady, who will be forced to sit in the pocket. Unlike recent the quarterbacks Dallas has faced, we don't expect #12 to roll out of the pocket every chance he gets or to scramble to freedom when flushed out of the pocket.

Even with a concerning situation at outside cornerback, give me the defense that's getting two starters back and that has ranked second in DVOA all year long. That's the best unit in this game.

The bet: COWBOYS -2.5

Season bets: 13-4

Last season bets: 9-7 (56.25%)
