The Cincinnati Bengals are looking to beat the Kansas City Chiefs for the fourth time in a little over a year. It's no secret, a huge reason why the Bengals have has this success is quarterback Joe Burrow.
If the Chiefs have any hope of breaking this streak, they have to find a way to neutralize Burrow and the Bengals' high-powered passing attack. However, that's much easier said than done with how poised Burrow is no matter the circumstances.
One of the men taking on the task of stopping Burrow, Chiefs defensive end Frank Clark, recently spoke on the difficulties of bringing him down.
“I think – just number one, I feel like as a pocket quarterback, I feel like he’s the best in the game," Clark said. "He’s got that Peyton Manning in him. No matter how many times he gets hit, no matter how many times he gets knocked down, he’s getting back up (and) he’s controlling, bringing and pulling his offense back together and making the adjustments and making the right plays.
"He knows how to read safeties and he knows how to read the defense and when you’re an immature defense or when you’re a defense that can’t really disguise the coverage or disguise things, he’s going to pick you apart every time. I feel like in the past – the last few games those are things that he’s been able to do is just expose us in those different aspects.”
Clark certainly has a reason to feel the way he does. Burrow has carved the Bengals' defense like a Thanksgiving turkey over last year completing 72% of his passes for eight touchdowns to just one interception. The biggest beneficiary has been Ja'Marr Chase who has 24 receptions for 417 yards and four touchdowns including his 266-yard performance last season, a Bengals single-game record.
Clark will have some help to combat the issue of stopping Burrow on Sunday. Defensive tackle Chris Jones, who was named a Defensive Player of the Year candidate, needs to do his best to apply pressure from the interior, which is a quarterback's worst nightmare, and force Burrow out of the pocket for guys like Clark and others to make plays.
It won't be easy to accomplish this mission, as Jones explained earlier this week.
"He’s tough to bring down, said Jones. "He’s quicker than he’s perceived. Agile – slithery at times – and hopefully we’re able to get our hands around him and get him down a couple of times, but he’s definitely a challenge to bring down.”
If the Chiefs don't come up with a plan to control Burrow, to some degree anyway, Cincinnati will likely make a second consecutive Super Bowl appearance.
