The Dallas Cowboys had the NFL world buzzing when they entered the sweepstakes for the services of free agent wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. Dallas went so far as to have All-Pro defenders Micah Parsons and Trevon Diggs accompany him to a Dallas Mavericks game in December, which certainly got the media into a frenzy.
Beckham's visit with the Cowboys didn't end in a contract, and Dallas signed veteran T.Y. Hilton instead. With free agency set to begin in March, the Cowboys are once again in the running for Beckham according to team owner Jerry Jones.
“Again, I’ve gotten to know him well,” said Jones earlier this week. “We’ll be talking.”
The thought for the Cowboys was that Beckham could come in and possibly be a contributor when the postseason rolled around. However, with uncertainty about his availability at the time, the Cowboys didn't put seal the deal with Beckham.
“It’s not realistic to think about having him in a meaningful way for the playoffs," said Jones. "Now, that’s not dismissing the future.”
It appears that the time, or future as Jones put it, is now in regards to Beckham joining the Cowboys. It makes sense with the current state of the Cowboys at wide receiver. CeeDee Lamb proved he was a true No.1 target with over 107 receptions for 1,359 yards in 2022. However, all of the other receivers on the Cowboys roster only tallied 1,161 yards for the season, and Michael Gallup just recently had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee and ankle.
Of course, when comes to the Cowboys, specifically executive vice president Stephen Jones, it's all about cap space, and he's never been mistaken for being a big spender. But even he has kept the door open for Beckham coming to Dallas.
“Oh, absolutely," Stephen said. "That’s the way we left it with him. Get ready to play, and then let’s revisit. We obviously had an interest for a reason.”
Beckham will undoubtedly have his fair share of suitors and the Cowboys may get priced out in this scenario. However, with the ultimate salesman Jerry Jones leading the charge, anything is possible.
