The Green Bay Packers are going into the off-season with questions surrounding the quarterback position.
Will Aaron Rodgers return? Is Jordan Love the future? If Rodgers returns, will Love be traded? A lot to figure out, and just from one position.
As far as the other positions on the Packers go, Green Bay is in a tight place. From a cap stand point. Ranking 27th in the NFL with $16.3 million under the cap.
Right off the bat, releasing Aaron Rodgers is out of the question. His contract is way too expensive and it's unlikely the Packers front office will want to restructure his deal. Moving even more of his already hefty deal down the line.
A common practice in the league is to use the highest earners on the team and re-work their deals. Aside from Rodgers, there are 10 players with a $7.5 million cap hit or higher:
- OT David Bakhtiari – $28.8 million
- DT Kenny Clark – $23.9 million
- CB Jaire Alexander – $20.2 million
- RB Aaron Jones – $20.01 million
- OLB Preston Smith – $13.04 million
- Edge Rashan Gary – $10.9 million
- LB De'Vondre Campbell – $8.2 million
- DB Adrain Amos – $7.95 million
- DB Darnell Savage – $7.9 million
- CB Rasual Douglas – $7.8 million
The Green Bay Packers can manipulate the cap by giving either or both Savage and Gary extensions. Moving a larger hit down the road.
They could also save a large portion of cap space were they to feel it's time to move on. For example, a post-June 1st designated release of Bakhtiari, Clark and Smith would open over $44 million in cap savings.
Whether the Packers will want to move on from any of these players will first come down to if they can agree to a restructure. The trade market will also open if mutual compensation can be agreed upon. Otherwise, a release is usually imminent.
Hard decisions are going to be made in the coming months. In ways that will shape the Packers future for better (?) and for worse (?).
Stay tuned.
